Helping a massive civil engineering firm get massiver
Barnard Construction is a leading heavy civil engineering firm, the sixth largest in the nation, founded by Tim Barnard in 1975 and headquartered in Bozeman. The company required a comprehensive rebrand and Massive’s pitch, humanizing the impacts of civil engineering projects, won the company over. The rebrand included a modernized logo, updated website, and video production.

Civil engineering is a lot more about the literal functionality of civilization than most people would realize, even Barnard Construction. These companies make it possible to furnish California with electricity and New York City with water. They define and build the infrastructure that supports the very foundation of modern civilization, the basic elements of functionally sustainable human life. Whether it's the warm bath at the end of a stressful day or the bedside lamp lighting the pages of our books as we nod off after, these things we all take for granted are envisioned and constructed by companies like Barnard. And that's precisely what we pitched and how we've since strategically positioned the company.
Barnard makes big projects happen because it has a duty to the people, to support the civilization in which we all share a vested interest. “People building for people” is front and center on all marketing materials and company collateral, and, while we came up with it, we think it might be the most perfectly succinct statement Barnard Construction could possibly make about itself.
In conjunction with the new brand identity and website, Massive produced motion graphics, still photography, and video to add visual interest and dynamic engagement opportunities across traditional and digital channels.
After running analytics and comparing with similar brands, we reworked the Barnard website to cut unnecessary content while streamlining recruitment information and application processes. People don't while away a lazy afternoon checking out the newest tunnel, power plant, or reservoir being built by a giant civil engineering firm. Barnard website traffic primarily consisted of new college graduates seeking their first professional employment and the occasional business looking to validate Barnard’s existence, portfolio, and credentials. As such, Massive distilled Barnard’s message, siloing content into simple headings to support its audience’s ease in navigating successfully and efficiently.
Go To SiteFor Barnard Construction's 50th anniversary, we designed an experience as bold and enduring as the company itself. From Tim Barnard's humble beginnings in 1972 — armed with nothing but a white Chevrolet C10, two shovels, and a pickaxe — to becoming one of the world's largest civil engineering firms, this milestone deserved a celebration that matched its impact. Hosted at the historic Montana State University Ballroom, Massive Studios ensured there was plenty of ball room for Barnard's past, present, and future to be honored in a way that truly reflected their legacy of strength, resilience, and growth.
At Massive Studios, we crafted a suite of internal office communications for Barnard Construction, ensuring consistency, professionalism, and brand alignment. From custom inserts, letterhead, and business cards to a professionally designed magazine, our work helped streamline communication and reinforce Barnard’s legacy of excellence across all touchpoints. Clear, cohesive, and impactful—because every detail matters.
